You’re right, they were colored tuft’s of caterpillar…. likely to entice a larger prey bug to the caterpillar… I’ve been too long gone from the area to know off hand what kind of caterpillar…

Ah. For me, then, the squeamish factor would kick in. But he/she/it is pretty… and stuck on a branch where it’s good and safe. 🙂
